The hike up Fossil Hill Trail is a fantastic way to take in the beautiful scenery and get some exercise. The trail itself is an easy one, but it’s worth noting that you may encounter some steep sections on your way up. It’s also important to be mindful of your surroundings and stay on the path so as not to disturb any wildlife or plants.
The beginning of your journey will bring you through the lush green forest before emerging on top where there are expansive views that stretch across many townships below, You’ll also have opportunities for water breaks when hiking along pathways marked by orange blazes.
But what makes this hike truly special are all the fossils along the route! You can find everything from ancient tree stumps to giant slabs of petrified wood, and they’re all easily visible thanks to how exposed they are due to erosion over time.

This is a difficult hike because it requires stamina and endurance to reach the top of the Fossil Hill Trail. The hike is 10 miles, with major inclines and declines throughout the entire journey to the top. However, once you reach the top of Fossil Hill Trail, the views are worth every ounce of energy that you expended getting there!
This is a difficult 8-mile hike because it requires stamina and endurance to overcome the long distance between this start point and the final resting spot at Fossil Hill’s summit. There are several large hills along this trail so be prepared for your legs to be burning after all the uphill climbs. The highest point on this pathway measures 780 feet above sea level so altitude sickness can become an issue if you’re not properly acclimated to hiking in the mountains. This is an all-day event due to the length of time it takes hikers to overcome this difficult hike.

It’s not recommended that you bring your dog along because there are several sections on Fossil Hill Trail where hikers must be agile and powerful enough to carry their pup up the steep hills and declines throughout the journey. There is also a stream that runs alongside the trail from the summit which makes it great for those who enjoy spending time around water.
If you’re planning on taking your dog with you on this hike, keep in mind the incline. It’s not recommended for everyone as some people don’t have strong enough backs! You’ll find views of Goose Cove and its surrounding area too before you make your way back down Fossil Hill Trail after a long day of hiking.
