Contra Costa Midrasha

25 Hillcroft Way, Walnut Creek, California 94597, United States

Contra Costa Midrasha is a non-denominational place where Jewish teenagers can explore their identities and broaden their Jewish understanding. CCM’s main aim is to get people together.

Teens nowadays don’t have a lot of time to talk about the major problems in life, such as how to communicate with one another in stable relationships, how to connect with their goals, and how to connect with their own faith.

CCM offers the time and place (weekly on Wednesday nights from 7-9pm and three retreat weekends a year) for teenagers to talk with these topics – to have those face-to-face discussions mediated by loving Jewish elders who know how to draw the lines of interaction – making Jewish traditions important to today’s Jewish teens.

CCM teenagers are from the towns and communities around the SF Bay Area’s 680 corridor.

CCM’s main teen leadership training focuses on equipping teenagers with the potential to do “tikkun olam,” or planet repair. The Teen Tikkun Olam Philanthropy Board’s mission is to instill philanthropy in young people through service learning.

Teens who participate in this initiative learn about fundraising and Jewish donation principles. The teenagers choose an annual cause to help as a community, learn how to fundraise when doing so, and then distribute the funds collected to groups whose work furthers their chosen mission.

The primary curriculum of Contra Costa Midrasha is its Wednesday night classes, which meet from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. every Wednesday during the academic year.

This program is for community-based 8-12th graders, and it includes Jewish-themed seminars and electives that are inspired and guided by what’s going on in their teen’s lives and the wider world.

Two other important CCM services seek to get Jewish teenagers interested in Judaism. Via the Hamsa Fund, youth are empowered to “be the transformation they want to see” by creating a Foundation. It meets on Sunday evenings once a month.

Their Mifgash initiative is a cultural exchange between Jewish-American teenagers and Israeli teenagers from Hod HaSharon’s Mozenson High School.

In June, Israeli teenagers will travel to the San Francisco Bay Area for a 10-day bus trip with their peers. CCM teens go to Israel in the winter for a 9-day home-hosted trip for Israeli teenagers.
